Overwatch: Origins Edition Review

Note: My review is based on the just concluded Overwatch Free Weekend, which provided full access to the game for a limited period. Played on PS4.

Wow, just wow…this has been the most fun I’ve had in a FPS game. This game is fantastic for the aiming impaired **coughs** me **coughs** and it just blew me away. But, make no mistake this is not a solid 5/5 or 10/10 game. There are only 4 regular modes (Assault, Escort, Hybrid and Control), a competitive mode, one special mode with limitations (currently Brawl), 13 maps and no campaign mode, but where it really shines is its roster of 22 characters, the ability to change heroes during a match and the fact that it’s truly based on players’ skills, understanding and sometimes trolling ability.

According to the in-title stats, I played over 10 hours, at the last time I checked – wasn’t able to check my final time due to my final match ending just before the midnight deadline. Personally, I was able to get into the characters & gameplay and as you can see from my highlight reel below, I’ve already gotten my regulars – D.Va, Bastion, Zenyatta, Reinhardt (he’s actually missing from my reel) & Reaper (I got used to using him rather late in my playthrough). Although, I had to explain to some of the guys I was playing with how the characters worked, since they’re proper FPS gamers with rapid response aiming & K/D obliteration, they found their initial solace in Soldier 76 before getting to grips with the game.

It’s very addictive, even with its limited modes and maps, you never really play the same game twice. It all depends on how all the players plays as a team and how your team reacts. I know for a fact, I’ve never played a FPS this intensely. I’ve owned Call of Duty: Black Ops III since January and I still haven’t made it to level 40 on multiplayer. I played Overwatch this weekend only and I’m 952 points away from level 21. Yes, I really did calculate it.

Overwatch is fantastic for the casual shooter gamer, with its team and objective based gameplay, it’s not as daunting as the classic shooters. You don’t need to be a sniping god. As you can see in this video below, Call of Duty fanatics can sometimes be easily beaten, since they can be distracted by their ability to rack up eliminations, while you can easily capture the objective.

It also has the dreaded micro transactions for the in-title loot boxes, you can get these through old fashioned grinding, but here’s the real kicker – the rewards are only cosmetic, it will not give an edge and they’re completely random. But, you’d look real cool with your new skins, tags, voice lines, icons, poses, highlight intros and if you’re lucky you can also get some gold to buy these things.

The full retail price (£54.99, currently on sale on PSN for £39.99) seems a bit steep with its current content, but with Blizzard declaring all future DLCs (maps, characters, modes etc) as part of the price, it seems a bargain for the long run, but I’m personally waiting for it to go below £20, on a very very very impulsive day maybe £30. It’s still an online only game with no campaign. Blizzard give us a campaign mode, the characters have a rich background and live in an interesting world (as seen in other Overwatch related media), we’d like to play that.

Final Verdict

3.5 out of 5 (for now)

Happy July 15 2015!

Also affectionately known as, the day that Sony & Amazon almost convinced me to spend rent money on a PS4 1TB bundle. To those who are unaware, the PS4 Ultimate Player Edition was released today. It was supposed to retail at £349, buta few retailers have been offering bundle deals left right and centre. Amazon kicked it off with their Prime Day deal – PS4 1TB with Destiny, PS TV, 3 months PS+ and a digital copy of Ultra Street Fighter. Now, I was not ready for this crazy when I picked up my Metro at the train station at 6am. I almost tried Amazon’s free Prime trial on the spot, but I am [barely] made of stronger stuff. This deal is still available until 23:59 tonight. You must be an Amazon Prime member.

GAME came out to play with their bundles:

PS4 1TB with PS TV & Destiny; PS4 1TB with PS TV & Watch Dogs; PS4 1TB & PS TV. Each were £329.99. Oddly enough, they’re selling the PS4 1TB for £339.99.

Oddly enough, Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury’s & Morrisons aren’t running any deals, so I expect some sort of heart attack style deals as we head closer to the Christmas period.

Of course, if you’re a real penny saver, you’ll have discovered at least two PS4 1TB deals under £300 thanks to a good exchange rate and free UK delivery from other European retailers. **coughs** hotukdeals.com **coughs**

Confession: If the Amazon deal was bundled with The Witcher 3 instead of Destiny, my fingers would have run amok, I would have woken up on my own private island and everything…then I would have found some garri & groundnut…
